Sigtuna is a quaint little town on the outskirts of Stockholm, right on the shore of a lake.

The town is the oldest in Sweden, having been founded in 980. For that reason it is very easy to understand its importance in Sweden’s early history. Creepy old church ruins with runic stones, Sigtuna Museer and the story told by the exhibition in the Rådhus explain a little further.

The medieval town center charms with picturesque little houses, small shops and cute cafés. We stopped for fika at Tant Bruns Kaffestuga when the smell of cinnamon and coffee became too much for our hungry bellies. Kanelbullar are my favorite part of Sweden. The fluffy, sugary pastries are miles better than any other pastry I have ever tasted.
